Making a Dho-gazza net

A few years ago I started making my own Dho-gazza nets. I looked around on the internet for years trying to find information but it was very scarce. And it's really something that you need to see to fully understand.

I finally learned how from my friend Jimmy Walker on one of his visits to Florida. Once I saw it done it was just a matter of practice. I've tried to explain it to a few people but I think this video series will make it much easier. It's not the most professional video but I hope it helps (just ignore the barking dog & screaming parrot).

If you want to make your own nets I recommend starting with the net making kit from Jann's Netcraft http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/

Great videos! I have a couple of questions though.
What kind of string are you using? Where did you get that shuttle?

The string in the video is bonded nylon from Jann's Netcraft. It's a little heavy for my taste. The shuttle is part of the kit from Jann's Netcraft. The kit comes with a book on net making, various shuttles & guages and a few other handy items.

The string I use most is the heaviest nylon thread you can find at Wal-mart. I think it's button thread or upholstery thread.

Thats fantastic thanks Eric!

Thank you very much. I tried to tie myself a net last fall, following the directions out of a book and failed miserably. This was much clearer.
Have you ever tried either monofilliment or braided fishing line?

I've never tried mono, I would think that it would shine too much. I do tie a lot of nets out of braided line, PowerPro works well. But braided line is THE most difficult to get to hold a knot, you have to tie double knots and tie them well or you'll get a lot of slipping.

I just made one with 6 lb. mono. It works great. I just trapped a passage shikra this morning. I made it for lanner falcons and red head merlins.

I just wanted to say thanks, I made myself a net, following your instructions and just this morning it caught it's first merlin. The hood you sent me looks great as well.

Because of the clarity of your instructions I have added a link to them in the "Nets and Net Making " forum at

This is addictive. I just made a large net out of poly rope to keep the firewood from rolling past the road (it's steep here).
Do you know where the name 'dho-gazza' came from?

Not 100% sure but I believe the trap originated in India.

This is a great video, I'm planning on making my first net tonight when I get off work. My next question is this: what do you use for your dho gazza poles. I've seen a few options, but they all seem a little unstable.

What a great resource, Eric. Thank you. Not sure when I will get around to trying this, so please don't take the page down!
